The basic distinction
A single split system pairs one indoor unit with one outdoor unit. A multi-split connects two to five (sometimes more) indoor units to a single, larger outdoor unit.
The decision usually comes down to how many rooms you're cooling and how much external space you have for condensers.
Single split: strengths and limits
- Lowest cost for a single room.
- Each system is independent — a fault affects one room only.
- Simplest to install and service.
- But: every additional room needs another outdoor unit, which quickly clutters an elevation.
Multi-split: strengths and limits
- One outdoor unit serves several rooms — much tidier externally.
- Cheaper per room than multiple single splits once you reach three or more rooms.
- Each indoor unit has its own control and can be off while others run.
- But: all rooms must be in the same mode (all cooling or all heating) on most standard systems.
- And: an outdoor unit fault takes every connected room offline at once.
Which to choose
For one room, a single split is almost always right. For two rooms it's close — compare quotes both ways, as the answer depends on how far apart the rooms are.
For three or more rooms, a multi-split is usually the better value and the better-looking solution. For larger properties or commercial premises with many zones, VRF systems take the same idea further with simultaneous heating and cooling in different zones.
Practical considerations
- Pipe run limits apply — indoor units can only be a certain distance from the condenser.
- Multi-split outdoor units are larger and heavier; the mounting position needs to suit.
- Combined capacity is usually less than the sum of the indoor units, on the assumption not all run at full output simultaneously.
- Servicing a multi-split takes longer, so annual maintenance costs more than a single split — but less than several separate systems.
