Best Air Conditioning Options for a Bedroom

Sizing, noise levels and positioning advice for getting bedroom air conditioning right.

Noise is the deciding factor

For a bedroom, sound level matters more than any other specification. Premium indoor units run as low as 19–22 dB(A) on their lowest fan speed — quieter than a whisper. Budget units often sit around 30 dB(A), which is noticeable when you're trying to sleep.

Ask specifically for the minimum indoor sound pressure level in dB(A), not the average. Also consider outdoor unit placement: siting a condenser directly under a bedroom window is a common and avoidable mistake.

Getting the size right

Oversizing is not a safe default. An oversized unit cools the air quickly then shuts off, leaving humidity untouched and producing a clammy, uneven feel.

  • Small bedroom (up to 12m²): typically 2.0–2.5kW.
  • Average double bedroom (12–18m²): typically 2.5–3.5kW.
  • Large or south-facing bedroom (18–25m²): typically 3.5–5.0kW.
  • Loft bedrooms usually need more capacity than floor area alone suggests, because of roof heat gain.

Features worth having in a bedroom

  • Sleep or night mode — gradually adjusts temperature and reduces fan noise overnight.
  • Adjustable louvres or draught-avoiding airflow so cold air isn't blown directly at the bed.
  • Timer and scheduling so the room is pre-cooled before bedtime.
  • Wi-Fi control, useful if you want to cool the room before you get home.
  • Good filtration if anyone in the household has allergies.

Where to mount the indoor unit

The usual position is high on a wall, ideally on the wall facing the bed rather than directly above it, so airflow crosses the room rather than blowing straight down onto sleepers. Avoid mounting above a radiator or directly opposite a window where the return air reading will be distorted.
