The fundamental difference
A fixed split system separates the noisy, heat-rejecting components (compressor and condenser) outside the building. Only the quiet indoor fan coil sits in the room.
A portable unit puts everything in one box inside the room, then pushes waste heat out through a hose in a partly open window. That hose is the source of nearly every complaint about portables: the window gap lets warm air back in, and the machine ends up fighting itself.

- Upfront cost: portable £250–£600; fixed split typically £1,800–£3,000 installed (indicative).
- Efficiency: fixed systems are commonly two to three times more efficient for the same cooling effect.
- Noise: portables typically 50–65 dB(A) in the room; fixed indoor units often under 25 dB(A) on low.
- Cooling performance: a fixed system will reliably hold a set temperature; portables often struggle in hot spells.
- Heating: most fixed systems heat efficiently in winter; most portables either don't heat or do so inefficiently.
- Installation: portable is plug-in; fixed needs an F-Gas registered engineer.
When a portable makes sense
- Rented accommodation where you can't alter the building.
- Occasional use in a spare room a few days a year.
- Flats where no outdoor unit position is achievable or permitted.
- A short-term fix while you plan a permanent installation.
When to go fixed
If you're using a portable more than a couple of weeks a year, are struggling to sleep, or work from home in a room that overheats, a fixed system is a substantially better experience. It's quieter, more effective, cheaper to run and provides winter heating too.
The break-even isn't purely financial — it's about whether the room actually becomes comfortable, which portables frequently fail to achieve in a genuine heatwave.
